The University of Vermont offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as non-degree certificates, for students interested in studying all aspects of the food system. UVM food systems faculty in academic departments in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities integrate their scholarly expertise with a transdisciplinary understanding of the food system. Whether you’re looking for hands-on experience in sustainable farming, research training in the field or at the bench, or the skills to run a business or non-profit, UVM has the food systems programs to feed your curiosity.
With the recognition that the emerging interdisciplinary field of Food Systems is a critical area of study and action, UVM has made a commitment to research, education, and outreach through the UVM Food Systems Initiative, a university-wide initiative crossing disciplines and creating new models of food systems scholarship and inquiry. At UVM, you’ll gain a sophisticated understanding of the dynamics of our current food system, learn cutting edge concepts for alternative food system models, and interact with food systems leaders from Vermont and beyond. Our annual UVM Food Systems Summit brings scholars, practitioners, and activists from across the country together every June for dialogue and intellectual exchange on the pressing food systems issues facing our world. The UVM Food Feed blog features weekly posts from UVM faculty, staff, students, and affiliates on topics ranging from cheese to climate change.
UVM faculty research and teach a wide range of food systems issues, from microbes in the soil, to farm-to-school, to migrant farmworker food security. Whatever your academic interests, you can pursue a Food Systems Minor in conjunction with any major on campus. At the graduate level, our Food Systems Graduate Program, currently offering a Master’s degree with a PhD degree on the horizon, offers students the chance to hone professional and research skills alongside courses designed to provide proficiency in food systems issues.
If you’re an aspiring farmer, non-profit leader, or mid-career practitioner, UVM has the non-degree programs to launch you on a new professional path or take your food systems career to the next level. Our Farmer Training Program provides students with a season-long immersion in sustainable food production at UVM’s Catamount Educational Farm. Our Food Hub Management Certificate gives students the skills and knowledge that are crucial for developing and managing a successful food hub. Our Sustainable Food Systems Leadership Certificate offers students an opportunity to sharpen their leadership skills while gaining valuable insights about the food system in Vermont and beyond.
